Frequently asked questions

General Residential FAQ

How much does a new power point or light switch installation cost?

The cost of installing a new power point or switch varies depending on whether it’s a new installation or a replacement, and the complexity of running new wiring. As well as the type of outlet, consider your changing tech needs and we can provide a quote.

What are the regulations for smoke alarms in Australian homes?

Across Australia, it’s a legal requirement to have working smoke alarms in your home. The specific regulations vary by state, but a general rule is that smoke alarms must be photoelectric, and in many cases, they must be interconnected so that when one alarm sounds, they all sound. For new homes or major renovations, alarms must be hard-wired to the mains power with a battery backup. We can ensure your smoke alarms are compliant with all local laws.

Is it safe to use a powerboard (extension lead) for all my appliances?

No. Powerboards are designed for temporary use. Overloading them with too many high-draw appliances (like heaters, microwaves, or kettles) can cause overheating, which is a major fire hazard. We can install new power points to reduce your reliance on powerboards.

Why is my safety switch tripping?

A safety switch, or RCD, is designed to trip and cut power in a fraction of a second when it detects an electrical fault. The most common cause is a faulty appliance, but it can also be due to damaged wiring or a water leak. We can test the circuit and find the source of the problem. Request a free safety audit today.

How do I know if my house needs rewiring?

Common signs your home may need rewiring include frequently tripping circuit breakers, flickering lights, a burning smell from power points, or old-style ceramic fuses. Rewiring is a major job but can significantly improve the safety and reliability of your home’s electrical system.

How do I choose the right electrician for my job?

When choosing an electrician, it’s crucial to check that they are licensed and insured. Always ask for a detailed, upfront quote and ask for references or check online reviews. A good electrician will also provide a warranty for their work (ours is 12-months) and an REC to prove registration with Energy Safe Victoria.

EV Charger FAQ

Can any electrician install an EV charger?

While all licensed electricians are qualified to work on your home’s electrical system, it’s highly recommended to hire an electrician with specific experience and training in EV charging installations. We understand the latest technology, compliance standards, and specific requirements for a safe and efficient installation.

What's the difference between a Level 1 and a Level 2 charger?

A Level 1 charger is a standard power point, which provides a slow “trickle charge.” A Level 2 charger is a dedicated wall-mounted unit that delivers a much faster charge. It requires a dedicated circuit from your switchboard to handle the higher electrical load safely. Most Australians choose a Level 2 charger for its speed and convenience.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard for an EV charger?

It depends on your home’s age and current electrical capacity. An older switchboard may not be able to handle the high, continuous load of an EV charger and will need to be upgraded for safety and to prevent power outages. We can assess your current system and advise you on what is required.

How much will it cost to install an EV charger?

The cost varies depending on the type of charger, the distance from your switchboard to the installation point, and whether a switchboard upgrade is required.

Sensor & Security Lighting FAQ

What are the benefits of sensor lighting?

Sensor or motion-activated lights offer two key benefits: enhanced security and energy savings. They deter intruders by instantly illuminating an area when movement is detected, and they save you money on your electricity bill by only activating when required. If you’re interested in upgrading or installing sensor lighting, contact us.

Can you install sensor lights that don't trigger for my pets?

Yes, many modern motion sensors can be configured to ignore smaller movements, such as those from pets. We can adjust the sensitivity and placement of the sensor to prevent false alarms while still providing effective security.

Where should security lights be placed for maximum effect?

Security lights are most effective when placed at strategic entry points, such as front and back doors, garages, and along pathways. They should be positioned to eliminate dark spots and shadows around your property and to avoid shining directly into your neighbours’ windows.

Home Doorbell Systems FAQ

Can you install a smart video doorbell like Ring or Google Nest?

Yes. While many of these are sold as “DIY” products, a licensed electrician can ensure the unit is safely and correctly wired to your home’s power supply. This is particularly important for wired models that require a constant power source.

Do I need existing doorbell wiring for a new system?

Not necessarily. While some smart doorbells can be wired into an existing system, many battery-operated models and wireless systems do not require any existing wiring. We can recommend the best option for your home.

What's the benefit of a wired smart doorbell over a wireless one?

A wired doorbell is always on and connected to your home’s power, so you don’t have to worry about replacing batteries or temporarily removing your doorbell to recharge the battery. It provides a more reliable connection, faster alerts, and a consistent power source for features like continuous video recording. Request a quote.

Split System Air Conditioning FAQ

Do I need a licensed electrician to install a split system?

Yes. In Australia, the electrical work for a split system must be performed by a licensed electrician. While some air conditioning technicians are qualified to install the unit and the refrigerant lines, they often rely on a licensed electrician to run the dedicated circuit and correctly wire the indoor and outdoor units to the mains power supply. Contact us if you have any questions.

Does a split system need a dedicated power circuit?

Yes, for safety and efficiency, a split system air conditioner must be installed on its own dedicated circuit. It cannot be connected to an existing power point or circuit with other appliances, as this could cause an electrical overload and trip the breaker.

What is the "isolation switch" required for an air conditioner?

An isolation switch is a safety requirement for all air conditioning units in Australia. It’s a switch installed near the outdoor compressor unit that allows the power to be completely cut off for servicing and maintenance.

Do you service and maintain split systems?

No, we only install new systems.
